One of the largest corporations in the world, has had its share of scrutiny due to the company’s business operations and socio-political stances. Amazon, though taking public stances in the past regarding diversity, equity and inclusion has in recent months made drawbacks to their DEI statements and public alignment amid the 2025 Trump administration.
HISTORY
First initiated in October 2019, Amazon presented the political and social stances held by the company, through the experience section of their “about” website. Amazon has, in the past expressed support for worker’s rights, and the importance of hiring employees of different diverse ethnicities. (aboutamazon.com)
CURRENT SHIFTS IN 2025
While there is importance holding these values of diversity, equity and inclusion, in February of 2025, many major American corporations have created significant drawbacks to their DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) programs, including Amazon. The current trend of DEI’s removal from the workplace operates to align with values that discredit the progress made in 2019. The reasons in Amazon doing so are due to pressures from the Trump administration, and a significant shift has been shown towards internal corporate priorities. Critics have gone on to argue that the drawbacks on DEI programs within Amazon could dismantle consumer trust and discredits the workplace equality that the company publicly suggests. The purpose of being complacent with the Trump administration protects the company but holds the potential of putting worker’s rights in jeopardy. (time.com)
Across social media platforms, it could be seen that in February of 2025, while drawbacks to DEI programs were happening internally— a photo was shared by Amazon CEO Andy Jassy on LinkedIn, highlighting Black History Month. Jassy posted with an employee-led group, the Black Employee Network publicly acknowledging the effort put in by the group, emerging at a time in which the terms “diversity and inclusion” were omitted from their annual report. SOCIAL MEDIA SUGGESTIONS
Through the oversight of Amazon’s activity on social media, it can be identified that the company is very advertisement heavy—endorsing showcased products and promoting Amazon itself. It is advisable within this structure to use a more balanced approach to how they engage in socio-political issues. Openly explaining company values and reasoning attached to policy changes can create trust within consumers. Highlighting the emerging insights and decision-making through public statements and explaining commitments and core values within these policy shifts can show their integrity and what the standards of practice that Amazon holds.
